Pan-Fried Onions
Ingredients
- 550g white onions
- 1 drizzle of olive oil
- 30g water
- 1 pinch coarse salt
- 2 tablespoons white wine
- 1 sprig fresh thyme
- Nutmeg, to taste
- 2 bay leaves
- 1 unpeeled clove of garlic
- Whole peppercorns, to taste
Instructions
- Peel the onions, rinse them quickly, and slice them into thick rounds (about 1 cm / 0.4 inch thick).
- In a suitably sized skillet, combine the olive oil, water, sliced onions, and coarse salt.
- Optionally, add the bay leaves and/or the unpeeled clove of garlic.
- Set the skillet over medium heat and cover with a lid. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10–15 minutes or until the liquid is fully absorbed.
- Pour in the white wine and continue cooking for another 10–15 minutes until the onion slices are tender yet still intact.
* Note: If desired, you can add a tablespoon of brown sugar along with a splash of vinegar to make this dish sweeter.
